Sammy sat in his car outside the hospital. He was pissed that Kaiah had gotten away from him once again. He was this close to having her but he let her slip away. He watched as Shauntez walked out of the hospital. He recognized him as Deonte’s brother and smirked to himself. He started his car up and slowly drove up to the door. He rolled his window down and aimed his Glock at Shauntez, pulling the trigger twice before speeding off and burning rubber.

Carlos and Deonte were the first ones to run for the door when they heard the gunshots. The sight of his little brother lying on the ground with two holes in his chest tore Deonte up. He immediately ran to his brother to see that he was barely breathing and his eyes were rolling to the back of his head. Doctors and nurses came out with a stretcher prepared to take Shauntez right on in, but Deonte wouldn’t let him go.

It took Carlos and Kaison to hold him back. “Chill man, they’re just trying to save his life,” Kaison said.

Deonte snatched away from his friends and punched a hole in the glass window, shattering in instantly. He didn’t even feel the pain in his hand because the pain in his heart hurt far worse. A nurse ran over to him and tried to get him to go into the emergency room to get his hand checked out but he refused.

“I’m straight man, this shit don’t bother me. The only ones I’m worried about is my brother and wife,” he fussed.

Synai slowly walked over to her brother and hugged him tightly. “Please D-Boy, go get your hand looked at. I don’t want you bleeding to death. What will I do with all three of y’all in the hospital?” she cried.

That tore up his heart. He had forgotten all about his baby sister. He knew this shit wasn’t easy for her and he hated that she had to witness this. “Alright baby girl, I’ll let em look at it.”

Kaily walked over to them and took Synai in her arms. “Your brother will be fine boo, don’t worry. He’ll pull through,” she said, wiping Synai’s tears. “How about we go check on Kay Kay?” Kaily suggested.

“Okay.” Synai nodded her head as she took Kaily’s hand and they walked to Kaiah’s room. When they got to her room, Kaiah had her eyes open and smiled faintly at them.

“I was wondering when my girls were about to come see me,” she joked. Synai took one look at Kaiah and broke down again. She really loved Kaiah and looked up to her. Kaiah reached out her arms and Synai ran into her arms. Kaiah hugged her and rocked her. “What’s wrong baby?” she asked.

“Tez…he...” Synai couldn’t get it out.

“What’s wrong?” Kaiah said, becoming worried. The pain medicine was starting to wear off and she was becoming alert.

Kaily stepped up and helped Synai. “Tez was just rushed back into surgery, he stepped outside for a minute and was shot twice in the chest right in front of the hospital. Deonte flipped out and punched the glass out. Synai had to talk him into getting checked out. Carlos is with him now.”

Senior and Dolly both left out the room at the news Kaily just delivered. Kaiah’s heart dropped, she just knew Kaily had to be bullshitting. “Call the nurse or doctor, call somebody and tell them to bring a wheelchair, I need to see Deonte and I need to see him now!” Kaiah said in a no-nonsense tone.

Kaily went and got some help. Kaiah just laid there with tears in her eyes. Her life went from sweet to sour in the blink of an eye. She wanted so badly to tell her daddy about Sammy making a surprise visit but she refused to do it in front of her mom. They still weren’t on good terms like that and she knew that bringing it up in front of her would cause more problems.

Kaiah really hoped that she didn’t have to act a fool if these people told her she couldn’t see Deonte. All she wanted to do right now was hold him in her arms. A nurse walked in rolling a wheelchair and her face was beet red. Kaily walked in the room wearing a scowl, so that let Kaiah know that her cousin showed her ass out there.

“I got her,” Kaily said, and the nurse took that as her cue to rush out of the room. “Come on, boo,” Kaily said, helping Kaiah into the wheelchair. She put the leg rests up to elevate Kaiah’s leg and they headed out of the room with Synai following close behind. When they got to the room where Deonte was being stitched up, he had a far off look in his eyes. When he noticed Kaiah, he started to tear up.

Even during her recovery, Kaiah still managed to be there for him when he needed her the most. Kaily wheeled her over to him and he leaned down and kissed her lips. He placed his forehead on hers.

“How many stitches did you get?” she asked.

  “Eleven.”

“Everything will be okay. I have faith that it will.”

“I know,” he whispered. “How you feel?”

“High as hell,” she said and everyone laughed. It was short-lived when a police officer walked through the door. It was procedure that anytime a gunshot victim came in they had to call the police. This was even worse since the shooting happened on the hospital’s grounds.

Everyone in the room got quiet as he walked further into the room. He walked over to Deonte and looked from him to Kaiah. “From our understanding, you are related to the victim.”

“He’s my little brother,” Deonte said.

“Do you have any idea who would want to target your brother?”

“No, my brother didn’t have beef with anybody. He’s not that type of person,” Deonte said, looking the officer right in their eyes.

He looked around the room at Kaiah, Kaily and Synai. “What about you ladies? Do you have any idea who would want to do this?” he asked. Everyone shook their heads without opening their mouths. He took a card out his wallet and held it out towards Deonte. “If you hear anything or find anything out, feel free to give me a call.”

Synai saw how her brother looked at the card and she knew he wasn’t going to take it so she walked up and took it from the officer. He faintly smiled at her and walked out of the room.

“I hate pigs.” Deonte shook his head.

For the second time in one night, Doctor Martin was on his way to deliver some news to the family. He lightly tapped on the door to the room before walking in with the rest of the family behind him. He looked over at Kaiah in the wheelchair and smiled. “You are supposed to be resting.”

“I know but I couldn’t rest knowing what happened to my little brother,” she said.

“Totally understandable.” He turned towards Deonte. “There seriously must be an angel watching over your family. Your brother made it out of surgery okay. One of the bullets was one centimeter from hitting his heart but both bullets were safely removed. I would let you go back and see him right now, but it’s getting late. You can come back and see him first thing in the morning. Besides, Mrs. Smith here needs her rest also,” the doctor informed everyone.

When the doctor left, everyone sighed in relief. They had literally just dodged two bullets. Everyone was content knowing that both Kaiah and Shauntez would be fine.

Deonte and Synai walked in their brother’s hospital room happy to see that he was sitting up. He was flirting with the nurse who was changing his bandages and all Deonte could do was shake his head. When the nurse left the room, he looked at his brother and sister and smiled.

“I never thought I would say this but I am so happy to see y’all ugly asses.” He smiled.

“Who you calling ugly, lil nigga?” Deonte asked.

“Right, who you calling ugly?” Synai cosigned.

“Ain’t no owls up in here so I’m pretty sure y’all know who I’m talking about.” Everyone busted out laughing. They were happy that Shauntez was still alive and already acting like his old self.

“Man, if you ever scare me like that again, I
promise we gon have a problem,” Deonte said.

  “I second that,” Synai agreed.

“You know I couldn’t leave y’all two knuckleheads here without me to ground ya’ll.” Shauntez smiled. “Anyways, how is my sister doing?” he asked.

“We’re going to see her next,” Deonte informed him.

“Tell her she need to hop her ass on down here and come holla at me, let me know that she still love me or something.”

“I’ll be sure to deliver the message.”

One floor up, Kaiah was flipping through the channels trying to find something to entertain herself when there was a knock at the door. She turned her head and smiled brightly. “Well, hello there, stranger,” she greeted Shemar.

She hadn’t seen him since they crossed that line and she would be lying if she said she didn’t miss him in a way.

“I let you out of my sight for a minute and look what you get yourself into.” He shook his head while bending down and kissing her forehead.

“Tell me about it,” Kaiah laughed.

“So how you feeling, lil mama?” Shemar asked as he placed the teddy bear he bought her on the table.

“Good, considering the circumstances. A slight headache, but nothing I can’t handle.” She smiled.

He ran his fingers through her hair and Kaiah shivered from his touch. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too,” Kaiah said just above a whisper.

Someone cleared their throat and they turned their heads to find Deonte standing there, and he didn’t look too happy. Kaiah got uncomfortable for a second as she looked from man to man.

“Hey Tae.” She smiled as she realized that Shemar never removed his fingers from her hair. This is so awkward, Kaiah thought.

“What’s up?” he said as he walked towards her but was still mugging Shemar. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything.”

  “Actually...” Shemar started.

“No,” Kaiah and Shemar spoke at the same time.

Deonte was about to go off about this nigga still having his hands on his wife when Synai walked in. “Hey Kay Kay!” she said excitedly.

“Hey boo,” she greeted her giving her a hug.

Shemar finally moved away from the bed, but he didn’t leave the room. He was letting Deonte know that he wasn’t a punk ass nigga and he didn’t intimidate him.

“D-Boy, did you tell her what Tez said?” Synai asked, not even knowing she just basically saved Shemar’s life.

“No, you can tell her for me,” Deonte said with his eyes still on Shemar. He didn’t like the fact that this nigga was all in Kaiah’s face, especially when he knew they fucked. He might have acted like he was cool with it when she told him but in all actuality, he wasn’t. He hated the fact that Kaiah would allow another man to get his honey pot. He wondered why she couldn’t just be like most women and cry, cuss him out then take him back; but no, she had to take it to another level and get revenge. One thing he knew was she wasn’t the average female and wasn’t scared to give him a dose of his own medicine.

He was brought out his thoughts by the sound of his little sister’s voice. “Kay Kay, Tez said you better hop yo butt in a wheelchair and come see him to at least let him know you love him,” Synai laughed.

“Is that right?” Kaiah asked. Synai nodded. “Well I guess I’ll be making a trip, huh?”

Synai looked up at Shemar like she was just now noticing him. “Hi,” she spoke before glancing back at Deonte. She didn’t want to cross her brother.

“What’s up lil mama?” Shemar smiled.

“So wife of mines, how are you feeling today?” Deonte asked.

“Good, I’m just ready to go home. I was waiting for you to come break me out but you never came,” she pouted.

  “Brat,” Deonte laughed.

  “I know,” she whined.

“I bought you a new thing of Superman ice cream too. Synai insisted that we go get you some for when you come home.” He smiled.

“Ohhhh, you do love me.” She smiled.

  “Spoiled ass.”

Shemar looked down at Kaiah when Deonte said she was going home with him. From his understanding, they were still at odds. “You’re going home?” he asked, voicing his thoughts.

“Why wouldn’t she? She is my wife,” Deonte spoke up before Kaiah could.

“You weren’t worried about her being your wife when you were cheating on her,” Shemar retorted.

“Okay, that’s enough,” Kaiah said. She could tell shit was about to get real. She tried to defuse the situation before it could escalate any more than it already had. “Shemar, me and Deonte reconciled and are going to work on our marriage.”

  “This some bullshit,” Shemar said.

“I hope you remembered what she tasted like because you will never taste it again, nigga.” Deonte smirked.

Shemar walked towards Deonte and Deonte got up like he was ready for him to make a move. Kaiah looked at Synai with worried eyes but before she could open up her mouth, Kaison, Carlos and Kaily walked through the door.

“Break this shit up,” Kaison said, standing between the two men. Carlos went and stood by Deonte, letting him know he was riding with him. “I think it’s time for you to roll out homey,” Kaison said to Shemar.

Shemar looked Kaison up and down before walking towards the door. “I’ll holla at you later lil mama,” he said over his shoulder before walking out. Kaiah just laid her head back on the bed, she didn’t need nor did she have time for the drama.

“Whatever the fuck you got going on with that nigga, dead it,” Deonte said.

Kaiah didn't respond, she just closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She did not need all this unnecessary drama when she already had other issues to deal with.

"Play crazy and act like you didn't hear me," Deonte said, pissed off. He couldn't believe another nigga was trying to step to him over his wife. The fact this nigga was even bold enough to come up to the hospital was beyond him.

"I hear you Deonte, now could you all please call a nurse. My head hurts."

Kaison reached over and pushed the button to let the nurse know her assistance was needed. In walked Stacy a few seconds later and she looked a little uneasy when she noticed Kaily. She didn't know how Kaily would react to her about the bomb she had dropped on her.

"What you need sweetie?" Stacy asked.

"My head is starting to hurt," Kaiah informed her.

"Okay, I'll go get you some painkillers. Anything else you need?"

  "No that's fine, thank you."

Stacy smiled and turned to leave the room. Kaily took that as an opportunity to follow behind her.

"Stacy wait," Kaily called out. Stacy stopped and turned towards Kaily. "I was wondering if we could sit down and have a talk whenever you're free. I still have some questions and I'm sure you have some also."

"Yes, I would love to," Stacy said.

Kaily took her phone out her purse and handed it to Stacy. "Put your number in so I can call you." Stacy put her number in and they said their goodbyes.

After Kaiah took her painkillers, she decided it was time to have a talk with the two people closest to her. "Kaily and Duke, I need to talk to you two about something very important." They both just looked at each other, then at Deonte, Carlos and Synai.

"I think she's kicking us out y'all." Carlos laughed.

"Just for a minute." Kaiah smiled.

After they left, Kaiah took a deep breath before speaking her piece. "Black tried to kill me and Uncle Sammy paid me a visit," she said real fast.

"Who tried to kill you?" Kaily questioned.

"Fuck that." Kaison jumped up. "Sammy did what?" he yelled.

"Duke calm down, please," Kaiah begged.

"No Kay Kay, I'm having a hard time grasping this shit because from my understanding that bitch ass nigga has been dead for years." Kaison paced the hospital room.

"Right? Kaiah, are you sure it was him? That concussion is not messing with your head, is it?"
asked Kaily.

"I'm very positive. Someway, somehow, Black got in my house and started choking the shit out of me because he claimed that I didn't love him and I let Deonte come between us. Then out of nowhere Black's head is damn near shot off and while I'm trying to catch my breath, Uncle Sammy appears out of fucking nowhere. He tried to grab me but I sliced him in the face with a knife."

"Fuck that!" Kaison said as he pulled out his phone to call his dad, but he was already walking in the room.

"Why y'all looking like that?" Senior asked, looking at all three of his kids.

"Pops, let me ask you a question and I want you to keep it one hundred."

  "Shoot."

Kaison looked at his sister then back at his dad. "Sammy ain't dead, is he?"

Senior was thrown off by that question. Sammy hadn't been brought up in years. "No," he answered with a sigh.

"Really, daddy? You had me thinking this man was dead for years but I had to find out otherwise when he pops up at my fucking house?" Kaiah said on the verge of tears.

Senior's head damn near snapped from his neck when he jerked his head in Kaiah's direction. "He did what?" he roared.

Kaiah shook her head, memories of the day her uncle took advantage of her filled her mind. She was just starting to get over it and now, all of a sudden, he just pops up. She was starting to wonder if she would ever get over being raped.

  3

Senior's mind had been fucked up ever since Kaiah told him that Sammy came to see her. He was starting to regret the day he lowered his gun from his brother-in-law’s head.

Senior was out on the stroll checking on his hoes when his son called him.

"Talk to me Junior," Senior answered his phone.

"Pop...something ain't right and I can feel it," Kaison said and Senior picked up on the worry in his voice.

"What you talking about? What ain't right?"

"It's Kaiah, she was sleep when I left Sammy's and I been calling her phone nonstop and she won't answer. My twin senses are kicking in and I'm not liking what I feel," Kaison explained.
